Northern Ireland (Irish: Tuaisceart Éireann, Ulster Scots: Norlin Airlann, Polish: Irlandia Północna) is one of the 4 countries of the U.K. Situated in the north-east of the island of Ireland (Eire) it shares a border with the Republic of Ireland to the south and west. Its population was 1,685,000, constituting about 30% of the island's total population and about 3% of the population of U.K. The capital and the largest city in a region is Belfast (from Irish: Béal Feirste, meaning "mouth of the sandbars"),as well as the second largest city  (over 267000 inhabitants) on the island of Ireland .
