Chemnitz - in 1953-90 called Karl-Marx-Stadt ( Upper Sorbian: Kamjenica; Czech: Saska Kamenice; Polish: Kamienica Saska), 243000 people.The third-largest town in Saxony. Located in the northern foothills of the Ore Mountains, it is a part of the Saxon Triangle metropolitan area comprising 3.5 million people. The city's economy is based on the service and manufacturing industry. The Chemnitz Technic University has around 10,000 students and is the centre of scientific life. In Chemnitz was born Katarina Witt - German Figure skater.
